March 13, 2014 City of Lethbridge remains in State of Local Emergency, Boil Water Order in effect Update as of 8 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014 The City of Lethbridge remains in a State of Local Emergency this morning due to a critical water storage situation. A Boil Water Order remains in effect in Lethbridge, Coalhurst, Coaldale and Lethbridge County (Diamond City is included). Further information on this order is available on the City’s website at lethbridge.ca. City of Lethbridge employees are working around the clock monitoring the river conditions in order to get us back to normal as soon as possible. Water restrictions remain in place and we are thankful to residents and businesses for their conservation efforts. The cause of this unprecedented situation stems from the extremely poor quality of the raw water in the Oldman River due to the rapid spring snow melt and runoff. Because of this, the City’s water treatment plant has been unable to process water that is safe for consumption since approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday. This has caused the city’s water reservoirs to be depleted to levels that threatened to compromise the city’s ability to provide adequate fire suppression capacity. In order to preserve our fire suppression capacity, water use is being restricted. The Boil Water Order will continue until reserves have been sufficiently replenished for fire protection and the city’s water system has been flushed to ensure the safety of the water supply. City of Lethbridge recreational facilities remain closed until further notice. The State of Local Emergency will remain in effect until the Water Treatment Plant is stabilized and we have adequate reserves in our reservoirs. Residents and businesses are thanked for their cooperation.
