March 13, 2014 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For more information contact: City Commissioner Andy Helmboldt, (269) 660-9659 City Recognized for Environmental Leadership BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The city achieved gold status for environmental leadership at the Michigan Green Communities conference in Flint on Feb. 25. As part of the Michigan Green Communities Challenge, participating local governments were awarded gold, silver, bronze or member seals of achievement reflecting community leadership in areas like natural resources conservation, green economic development and energy efficiency. Battle Creek received gold status for exemplary action in a variety of categories, including the collaborative regional initiative Area Metropolitan Service Agency. The AMSA develops the mechanisms and processes that will allow member governments to participate cooperatively and voluntarily in providing needed goods and services to their respective government units. The challenge includes action items under each of four categories — Administration and Planning, Built Environment, Economic Development and Natural Resources. Communities earn points through the completion of action items. Highlights of the citys actions toward gold status are its comprehensive curbside recycling program, City Halls green roof and biomass broiler, and various storm water projects and community events, like the Childrens Water Festival (May 16 this year) and River Clean-Up fall event (Oct. 4 this year). The citys Sustainable BC Committee, which exists to increase city efforts to incorporate environmentally-responsible policies in its management of facilities and services, made the decision to participate in the Michigan Green Communities Challenge. Im extremely proud of the effort our city and staff have put into making our services and facilities sustainable, said City Commissioner and committee member Andy Helmboldt. Weve still got plenty of room for growth, and the Sustainable BC Committee is hard at work at further planning. But this award just goes to show the great progress weve made as a community already, including committing to a new, first-of-its-kind waste water treatment facility that will propel us toward becoming a more energy-efficient and sustainable community.
