March 14 in history 1812 – The U.S. Congress approves the issue of Americas first war bonds, worth some $11 million, to help finance War of 1812 against Great Britain: Governments throughout history have needed to borrow money to fight wars. Traditionally they dealt with a small group of rich financiers, but no particular distinction was made between debt incurred in war or peace. An early use of the term war bond was for the $11 million raised by Congress in an Act of 14 March 1812, to fund the War of 1812, but this was not aimed at the general public. 1964 – A jury in Dallas finds Jack Ruby guilty of killing Lee Harvey Oswald, the assumed assassin of John F. Kennedy. Pi Day – The number π is a mathematical constant, the ratio of a circles circumference to its diameter, approximately equal to 3.14159. It has been represented by the Greek letter π since the mid-18th century though it is also sometimes spelled out as pi. Pi Day is an annual celebration commemorating the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (or 3/14 in the U.S. month/day date format), since 3, 1, and 4 are the three most significant digits of π in the decimal form. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day. In the year 2015, Pi Day will have special significance on 3/14/15 at 9:26:53 a.m. and p.m., with the date and time representing the first 10 digits of π.10L
