March 17 Business by the Book Matthew 20:13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? If you have a job you are a business. Your product is your time and abilities. Upon accepting a position a wage is established. In return for a certain amount of money you agree to give a certain amount of work. Every person needs to manage this business very carefully. As with all businesses, your business is to maximize sales. A company that manufactures cars has multiple ways to increase sales. They can sell more cars, create an expensive model of their car that has more features, or decrease the cost of production by improved manufacturing technics. If an organization needs to make more money there are numerous ways to do so. But what about the business of you? How can you increase income? The hours worked can be increased however this is a very limited option. After all, there are only 168 hours in a week; there is a limit on the hours one can work. A better way to increase your income is to give your employer a better product. Improve your ability, knowledge, skill, or productivity. If your current employer does not reward you in relation to your improved status, a different employer probably will. After all, your time is your business, why allow someone to take advantage of the product you offer? You have the freedom to work anywhere, why not sell your time to the highest bidder? Many people do not understand this simple concept therefore they “sell themselves short”. Years ago someone said to me, “There is a difference between ten years’ experience and one years’ experience ten times.” So true! I have always firmly believed that if a person is making $10.00 an hour and desires to make $15.00 an hour they should begin to give $15.00 worth of work and one day they will make $15.00 an hour. Either their current employer will increase their pay or another employer will buy your time for that price. Many times today individuals want to make $15.00 an hour but only give $5.00 an hour effort. The only door this opens is the door to the unemployment office. A business owner was overheard saying, “Too many people quit looking for work when they find a job.” The reason homerun hitters make so much money, the reason CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies make so much money, the reason brain surgeons make so much money is because few people can do what they do. Establish a reputation for doing something others cannot do and business managers will be happy to pay you handsomely. If not, find one that will. Your time is your product, enhance your time by enhancing your skills, and the sale of your time will command a higher sales price. It really is that simple.
