March 19 Avid Collector For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:8) Capitalism thrives on our felt need to add to our collections—collections of tools, clothes, jewelry, golf clubs, books, electronics, CDs, DVDs, fishing lures, shoes, and various trophies from our e-Bay victories. Peter exhorts us to get the faith starter kit and regularly add to the collection of godly character qualities found in verses 5-7. Then, in the context of presenting the benefits of accumulating these qualities, verse 8 offers a sobering reality: It’s quite possible, even common, to be “ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of Christ.” My brain’s hard drive can be filled to capacity with truthful and helpful knowledge from the Scriptures and great Christian books. But ultimately it begs the question asked by G.K. Chesterton: “How is your theology transforming your biography?” It takes time to add to a collection of rare eighteenth century coins. You develop an appreciation of their value and then you become a hunter, scouting and searching to find their trail. Transforming your character requires that you value the outcome enough to constantly stalk the qualities of Christlikeness. It’s a life-long journey. When would you like to start?
