March 19 is an important date in our family diary, That was the day Richard was born at Presbyterian Hospital, Albuquerque. In 1969, that was our first day in India, when we went out from Madras to visit Vellore Christian Medical College- and celebrated Richards first birthday with a single candle on a bun! This year, last night, he gave his inaugural lecture on being granted a personal Chair in Medicine in the University of Otago here in Christchurch School of Medicine. It was part of a series of lectures open to the public. He did a great job of making the meticulous research of the group understandable and interesting to every one, with great illustrations. They have been doing innovative work which improves diagnosis, prognosis and care of cardiac patients. He explained how they are using new analyses of ECHO observation which they have validated, improved understanding of the contraction of the heart and synchronising techniques, cardiac hormone estimations in which they have been pioneers (his Ph. D. topic), and implanted pressure measuring devices in the left atrium which means they use physician directed self-administered care using pressures which come up on the patients iPods. 50 fascinating minutes which kept everyone enthralled- even though I say it myself! He introduced the many members of their team who have contributed to this work as he went along..
