March 1914: THE GARW NONUNIONIST TROUBLE THE GARW NON-UNIONIST TROUBLE. STRIKE AVERTED. The feared stoppage of a few days in the Garw Colliers has been averted. The trouble arose over the periodical show cards, and when it was found that a large number of men were not in compliance it was decided to tender a fortnights notice. The notices ex- pired on Monday, and on Sunday it was gath- ered that there were four non-unionists at the Ocean Colliery, one at the International Colliery, and at the Ffaldau Colliery three were 15 in arrears, and 45 without transfers. The following notice had been posted through- out the district: A large number of men are in arrears and have not brought their transfer cards, and there are others from whom entrance fees are due. Over 900 trade unionists are deter- mined not to work with non-unionists. Thev are equally determined that the pits shall not stop owing to these non-unionists. On Sunday evening the criers were out ask- ing all the men to produce their clear cards on Monday and advising those not in com- pliance not to attempt entering the pit, but to stay peacefully at home. It was also under- stood that the non-unionists at the Inter- natioila.1 Colliery-a, non-associated colliery— would not be allowed to work by the manage- ment. There were no scenes of any kind on Mon- day and on Monday evening it was declared that the whole trouble was settled, and the notices were withdrawn.
