March 2011, Julia Gillard became the 4th Australian PM to address a joint sitting of the US Congress. This section of her speech: For my own generation, the defining image of America was the landing on the moon. My classmates and I were sent home from school to watch the great moment on television. I’ll always remember thinking that day: Americans can do anything.... I firmly believe you are the same people who amazed me when I was a small girl by landing on the moon. On that great day I believed Americans could do anything. I believe that still. was howled down with derision by members of the opposition and their cheer squad in the Right Wing MSM as being naive, cow towing, insulting, embarrassing, sycophantic, girlie, childlike and more.... July 2014, Tony Abbott, in his speech when Japanese President Abe addressed both houses of the Australian Parliament, said of the submariners who attacked Sydney Harbour: We admired the skill and the sense of honour that they brought to their task although we disagreed with what they did. Perhaps we grasped, even then, that with a change of heart the fiercest of opponents could be the best of friends. The silence of those same people who attacked Gillard, and the defence by some of Abbott’s embarrassing incompetence and insulting stupidity shows the lengths to which they will go to achieve and maintain power for the Far Right of politics in this country.
