March 22 Southern Mountains to Inarajan If youre up for a real Boonie Stomp challenge, this is the hike for you. Its the longest hike we do, 11.6 miles, covering the tops of the southern mountains, a trek through the seldom seen interior of southern Guam, the big sand hill challenge, and a visit to Inarajan Falls. This hike is rated Very Difficult due to the length, the lack of shade, and a long steep hill descent through thick swordgrass. Please bring plenty of water, snacks for energy, and well broken in shoes. After a long car shuffle we ascend the gentle but steadily uphill trail to the summit of Mt. Jumujong Manglo, where we look at the crosses and enjoy the excellent views. Descending through the swordgrass tunnels to the broad open plateau ridge we continue south past the tower rocks, past the submarine rocks, past the swamp, and up to the old helicopter landing pad. There are fine views all along the way. Its then downhill and across the clay areas to the lunch rocks where we eat and rest. Climbing to the next high ridge we cross higher swordgrass, tunneling in places, skirt past the erosion cliff, slide down the skinny clay ridge, and break out into the open plains before reaching the nipple rocks. From here its steeply down through thick swordgrass to Atete, the shoulder of the ridge connecting to Mts. Schroeder and Sassalaguan. We turn downhill and follow an old jeep trail to the rach junction, then head cross country to the high ridge. Crossing the top we slide slide down the death defying high challenge big sand hill, and cross to the Dante cut-off trail. We follow this through the jungle to the Inarajan river and then side trip to the top of Inarajan Falls. From here we follow the long, fairly level jeep trail back to the Laolao river valley. Descending to cross the river, theres just one last big hill up to reach our waiting cars and the well deserved cold lemonade.
