March 29, 1974, 40 years ago: Francis Ford Coppolas film version of “The Great Gatsby” premieres, starring Robert Redford as Jay Gatsby, Sam Waterston as Nick Carraway, Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan, Bruce Dern as her husband Tom, and a very young Patsy Kensit as their daughter. It is not the first film of F. Scott Fitzgeralds novel, but a 1926 version is lost, and a 1949 version with Alan Ladd and Betty Field is tied up in legal wrangling and is hardly ever seen. The 1974 version is not as faithful to the novel as the recent version with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan.
