March 30, 2014 It is with a heavy heart that the College of Monarchs of the Mother Court of Canada announces the passing of our founder, the Empress of Canada – Mr. ted northe. Her Majesty passed, peacefully, today following a brave and lengthy battle with cancer. A pioneer, and some would even say a trailblazer in Vancouver’s gay community, ted was an activist for gay rights and founded the Imperial Empire of Canada in 1964, of which ted northe became The Empress of Canada. This organization went on in later years to become the Dogwood Monarchist Society and Mother Court of Canada – Vancouver, British Columbia. Mr. northe’s legacy saw the formation of at least 13 Court Chapters within Canada and countless other organizations which were formed by those Courts, including countless Mr. Ms. and Miss Gay Organizations as well, locally, the West End Slo-Pitch Association. In addition to the legacy of the Canadian Courts, ted recently formed the Empress of Canada Foundation to further accomplish his goals and legacies. In recognition of his life’s work in advancing human rights and eliminating suffering for countless members of the LGTBQ community, Mr. ted northe has been bestowed many honours for his accomplishments including the Canadian Red Cross Humanitarian and Distinguished Citizen Award, the Governor General’s Special Service Medal for Distinguished Citizen and Humanitarian, the inaugural recipient of the Jose Honor Award, and inaugural recipient of the Royal Canadian Order of the Maple Leaf, as well as in 2009 the Q Hall of Fame in. Recently, ted was presented with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. Well-loved and respected by many, ted’s passing will certainly leave a void in the lives of many who have come to know his great work over the years. We are terribly saddened by his passing and hope that we may all rise to the privilege and challenge of honouring his memory and legacy. His grace and smile will certainly be missed. The Dogwood Monarchist Society keeps ted’s family, loved ones, and friends in our thoughts, well wishes, and prayers during this very difficult time. As information becomes available to us regarding funeral arrangements, we will provide it on our website and Facebook group. May you Rest in Peace, Your Majesty. Respectfully, The College of Monarchs Vancouver, British Columbia ~ The Mother Court of Canada
