March 31, 2014 will be just another day for most. Yesterday if you happened to be on the highways and road ways somewhere between Fultonville and South Edmeston you may have seen a few trucks hauling cattle trailers. But for most, what is so different about seeing a cattle trailer winding its way down the rural counties of NY. The wind blew from the northwest, the temps were hovering around 40, transition weather, happens twice a year, doesnt last forever, it just seems that it does. Today, and tomorrow, and the next, the phone will ring at the feed store, the veterinarians office, the dairy supply office, the equipment store, the milk plant, etc. Feed trucks, vet trucks, dairy supply trucks, semen trucks, equipment trucks, milk tankers, and even cattle trucks will be hauling their loads and services up and down the rural roadways. Not much has changed, for most. But for the Ralph Friers and Marianne Friers their world was forever changed when they made the difficult decision to sell their cows. Another barn stands empty, the daily wear and tear on their bodies will lessen, their life wont revolve so close around the clock at both ends of the day, but it is the one things we as members of the human race fear the most, change. Their family will have a lot of memories to share with the next generation, theyll take the work ethics that dad and mom didnt just teach them but showed them. Today the cows go through the auction ring, the family will watch the efforts of all their hard work disappear on the backs of each and every animal as it gets marked sold and exits the ring. The family will go on to the next chapter in their lives as dairy farmers semi-reitired. Thank you for being dairy farmers!
