March 4 “Choose” – Joshua 23-24 Joshua 24.15 – “If serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” This is one of the most memorable verses in all of the Old Testament. Joshua was old and knew he did not have much time left. So, he wanted to give some last words to the people. He called the people to “fear the Lord and serve Him with all faithfulness” (24.14). He also called them to throw away any foreign gods their forefathers had worshiped and to serve the Lord. He then called them to choose. They could either worship the gods of their ancestors who did not know the Lord as well as the gods of the land, or the One and only true and Living God. However, no matter what the people chose, Joshua and his family would serve the Lord. I love the boldness of his statement. He makes clear what the right and best choice is and why it is the only choice. However, he also realizes that not everyone will make the right choice. Regardless of what the people choose, he would not be influenced. He would live for the Lord and teach his children and grandchildren to do the same. Many times our choice to follow the Lord Jesus Christ is an unpopular one in our world or even within our own families. Most of those we live with will choose to go their own way and worship the god of self. But, no matter how difficult living for the Lord may be in the face of opposition, it is the best, right and only choice. Joshua set a great example as a leader of the nation of Israel. We need to do the same for our families and those with whom we have influence. Have you boldly proclaimed, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”?
