March Against Austerity, Dundee, Saturday 6th December. Several - TopicsExpress

March Against Austerity, Dundee, Saturday 6th December. Several members of Radical Independence (Angus) took part. Note our friend Andy Broon playing his bagpipes at the front of the march (Andy is the piper without a bunnet on his heid). The Scottish Unemployed Workers Network had decided to say the march was against austerity AND FOR HOME RULE in the hope that some socialists, trade unionists, etc, who had been on the no side in the referendum, would be prepared to join in the fight against austerity. But far from being a unifying gesture, this kinda backfired. In practice, it looked like nobody whod been on the no side was there; and the Dundee Against Welfare Sanctions group refused to provide a speaker, because theyre in favour of independence, not home rule. Our friend Mike Vallance did speak, on behalf of Edinburgh Campaign Against Poverty, and he was able to tell us about a couple of successes they have had, through direct action, just this week, in Edinburgh. And Mike drew attention to the good work that DAWS is doing. Still, can we assume that, in practice, here in Scotland, the initiative in the fight against austerity will come from those who are pro-independence?
