Marchette DuBois of the Bucharest Drinking Team is offering an Introduction to Music of E. Europe and the Balkans class on Thu. May 22nd. Read her bio here: Marchette has been a musician most of her life, she started playing piano at the age of 4. Over 20 years ago, she took a class at Cornell University called “The Music of Hungary and Eastern Europe”. This change the course of her life, she was instantly drawn to the new and peculiar sounds of the music of this region, and has since devoted her life to the learning and teaching of it. In 2003 she made her first trip to Romania to learn Romanian at The University Babes-Bolyai in Cluj. Since then she has studied with teachers in Romania, and Macedonia. In the States she has learned from a variety of teachers including Kalin Kirilov (Bulgaria), Chris Bajmakovic (Macedonia). And Raif Hyseni (Albania). She has taught courses through the University of Washington’s Experimental College, briefly at Cornish College of the Arts, as well as privately. She currently leads the Balkan band “Bucharest Drinking Team” whose mission is to create the feeling of a Balkan celebration wherever they perform. On a more serious note, she sits on the board of the Seattle based non-profit the American-Romanian Cultural Society, whose main objective is to bring together the community of people in the Northwest who love current Romanian culture. arbutusfolkschool.org/current-classes/
