Marching With Caesar-Rise of Augustus This is RW Peake’s fifth volume in his fictional memoir of Titus Pulla. Peake refers to it as his “Penultimate” novel in the series or the next to the last in the series. Pulla is much older, nearly 50, though feeling the aches and pains of his chronological decline his is still active and a force to be reckoned with in the “New” army of Augustus. At this point in his career he is in the position of Camp Prefect in an area of what is not the Serbia- Croatian area of the Balkans. He struggle against the loss of long standing friends, politically appointed legates and corruption in the army. We meet new tribes of “Barbarians”, new evils and discord in the ranks. RW Peake captures the image of the old soldier beginning to come to terms with the inevitable. He sees the new army in the face of the budding career of his nephew and the old fading away into memory as friends begin their journey on Charon’s boat. There is a somewhat melancholy feel almost nostalgia for the past but Pulla has great bursts of energy in trying situations. Peake has a great grasp of this genre I enjoyed this series very much more than Simon Scarrow’s series on “Cato and Macro” whose plot implausibility and lust for action detract from the narrative. Although Peake is less well known he Plots are solid, believable and his characters are fully nuanced with flaws and scars. I would rank Peake and SJA Turney among my favorite authors in this genre of Roman historical fiction. I look forward to the last volume in this series. amazon/gp/product/B00E9OS8JI/ref=cm_cr_mts_prod_img
