Marco and Mary will be teaching two workshops -- with a special focus on Troilo for the 100 year anniversary celebration -- at the Boston Tango Festival, June 20 and 21 (bostontango.org/the-festival.html). (1) Friday, June 20 (3:15-4:30 pm, Dance Union): Tango Music and Movement: Lyrical Gestures and Dramatic Pauses in Music of the Golden Age (in preparation for the Troilo class on Saturday) Golden Age tango music comprises complex musical layers that are sometimes lyrical, and sometimes staccato or marked, but they may also combine the two styles at once. The musical phrasing often features dramatic pauses, or places of repose. This workshop will teach dancers to hear and predict where these occur. Exercises in movement quality will show ways to express this contrast in the dance. This class will also help to prepare dancers for Saturdays special class on Troilo. (2) Saturday, June 21 (4:45-6p, Dance Union, immediately following the lecture about Troilo): Tango Music and Movement: Listening and Dancing to Triolo In this workshop, we will teach you how to listen to and recognize the distinctive musical style of Triolos tango orchestra. Carefully designed exercises in movement quality will show dancers feel and express Troilos brand of phrasing and lyricism. No prior technical musical knowledge is necessary.
