Marcus Mariota given 2-year membership to ritzy Waialae Country Club in Hononlulu By Mike Tokito | The Oregonian/OregonLive January 22, 2015 at 5:05 AM Marcus Mariota has done a lot to foster pride in his home state of Hawaii. Apparently one of his hometowns best-known sports establishments is giving him something back. Dave Reardon, a columnist for the (Honolulu) Star-Advertiser, reported on Twitter that Waialae Country Club has granted Mariota an honorary two-year membership at no charge. Waialae is a posh private club that has served as the course for the PGA Tours annual Sony Open since 1965. This years tournament concluded Sunday, with Jimmy Walker winning by 9 shots. The course, which was built in 1927, is not only in Mariotas hometown of Honolulu, but it is in the neighborhood he grew up, Kahala, an upper-middle-class area near Diamond Head where Mariota played Pop Warner football for the Kalani Falcons. A membership to Waialae, according to reports, requires a $52,000 initiation fee. Before becoming the first player in Oregon history to win the Heisman Trophy, Mariota played at Honolulus St. Louis High School, a private school that regularly churns out Division I players and state championships. Last week, Mariota announced that he will forgo his senior year of eligibility at Oregon and enter the NFL draft.
