Margaret (Marti) Lewis Genealogist/Family Historian Bio: Margaret (Marti) Lewis, is a compelling and influential voice in the genealogy community, she has been featured, quoted, profiled and published in several major media publications. Marti, also volunteers’ as a Contributor to Find A Grave, Consultant on African American Research at the San Diego Family History Center, Administrator for the African American Genealogy Research and California Genealogy Research pages on Facebook, she’s also the President of the San Diego African American Genealogy Research Group. Marti is available on Thursday evenings to help individuals one on one with their personal family research at the Family History Center at 4195 Camino Del Rio South, from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m., she also teaches a free series of classes in “Researching Your Roots” from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Although Marti’s focus is African American Research her presentations offer research strategies’ for other nationalities as well. The class schedule is listed below- November 7, 2013 Researching Your Roots “With Particular Emphasis on the Challenges Unique to Researching African Americans” - Beginning class with emphasis on African Americans Research. November 14, 2013 Deciphering if it’s the . . . “Wrong Name, Right Man, Wrong Man, Right Name” - Learning to weigh the nature of evidence to determine and to substantiate whether this man belongs to this name or this name belongs to this man. November 21, 2013 Researching Slaves in the Family - Sharing strategies and resources on researching slave ancestors. December 5, 2013 Identifying & Researching Your Ancestors’ Who Served in the Military - The objective of this presentation is to research the vital dates on your pedigree chart, and the information on census and death records to identify your ancestors who may have served in the military. December 12, 2013 Breaking Down Walls, Brick by Brick (Using Clues in the census) - The gaps on your pedigree chart with missing information is your brick wall. Each question that you have most likely has several sources where you can look for the answers to help fill in the gaps. Census records can help fill some your gaps. December 19, 2013 On-Line Family Trees - On-line Family Trees provides a quick and easy way to organize, share and preserve your family history. This session will demonstrate how to build and organize your on-line family tree website providing a permanent home for your family history. January 9, 2014 Genealogical Research on “Find A Grave” - Find A Grave is a resource for finding the final resting place of family members. Some memorials contain rich content including photos, and biographies and it’s an invaluable tool for the genealogists. January 16, 2014 Genealogical Research Using DNA- Understanding the value of DNA testing for the purpose of genealogical research. I will be on vacation the week of Thanksgiving and also for 2 weeks for Winter Break starting the week of December 23, returning to my regular schedule on January 9, 2014.
