Margate Hurricanes (16-1) defeated Hammonton (10-3) last night 5-1, giving The Canes more of a stranglehold on first . Jared Lenko , Riv as Pete Thompson has now labeled him, struck out an incredible 14 in his 7 innings complete game. Riv only allowed 4 hits, but allowed 6 walks which kept him on the ropes most of the night, but the strikeouts were his friend, as well as the infield play of Pat Goodwin who handled 5 chances flawlessly. Aaron Cox got the Canes on the board with a deep HR to left field in the 2nd. Junior Mejia tied it up in the top of the 6th with a HR of his own to left center. The Canes then tacked on 4 in the bottom of the 6th with singles by Steve Normane, and Dug Hiltner. Dan Coias sacrifice bunt was thrown away into right field scoring Normaine. Goodwins single then brought in Hiltner, and an Eric Fitzgerald sac fly brought in the 3rd run of the inning. David Housel s single then brought home the final run. Jason Law did nothing. Margates victory gives the a 2 1/2 game lead over Hammonton (Canes won 2 of 3 for a tiebreaker) for seeding in the upcoming playoffs. Margate hosts Absecon Acbl Weds night with Lou Pepper on the mound, backed up by Cox. Fri night they host Northfield with Jason Downey pitching. Date to remember; Fri 7/18 Alumni game 5 pm, followed by ACBL game vs OC.
