Marguerite Frances Hume, ,93, (Kent School Class of 56) passed away Thursday October 30, 2014 at Treyton Oak Towers in Louisville, KY. Marguerite was a native of Louisville and a graduate of the Kentucky Home School and Sweet Briar College. During World War II she served as a Red Cross caseworker, helping the families of our prisoners of war. After the war she entered the field of public relations, working first for WAVE-TV, and later moving to New York, where she was employed as Director of Publicity for Conde Nast Publications and Director of Public Relations for Barnard College. Following her return to Louisville in the 1950s, she earned a Masters Degree at the University of Louisville Kent School of Social Work, after which she became head of social work at Childrens Hospital. In 1961, she rejoined the Louisville Chapter of the American Red Cross, where she served as Director of Services to Military Families and Director of Community Emergency Services. For many years, even after her retirement in 1991, she continued training Red Cross disaster relief volunteers. She also volunteered for the Department of Family and Juvenile Services, the J.B. Speed Art Museum, Cabbage Patch Settlement House, the Womens Club, the Arts Club, Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic, and Highland Presbyterian Church, where she served as elder and choir member. In 1999, she received the Red Cross Exceptional Volunteer Service Award, and in 2002 received the Red Cross Clara Barton Award for Meritorious Volunteer Leadership and the WLKY Bell Award for civic and community contributions. Marguerite was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Beulah Hume, and her brother, Walter Hume Jr., all of Louisville. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Florence Hume; her nephews, Bradley Hume (Glen) and Craig Hume (Michelle); her niece, Sarah Kooser (Bill); and many great-nephews and nieces, all of whom will miss her warm smile, gentle spirit, and unwavering support and encouragement. Her family wishes to thank the staff at Treyton Oak Towers for their loving care during her final years. A memorial service and reception will be held at a later date at Highland Presbyterian Church. Pearsons has been entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Red Cross Louisville Chapter, Highlands Presbyterian Church, or Kentucky Refuge Ministries.
