Maria Fife defeats the claim that women were always more likely to vote no because theyre more timid and less ambitious than men. Try telling that to the Scottish women at the fore of the suffragette movement and Mary Barbour, a working-class Glasgow woman, who led 20,000 women, supported by the men in the factories and shipyards, to victory in the rent strike in 1915, winning a change in the law at Westminster that benefited the whole of Britain.
