Maria Mitchell, an important female pioneer in Astronomy. (She was the third child of a Quaker family with ten children.) For whatever reason, Quakers were in the forefront of feminism. They were heretical because they allowed women to speak in meeting, ignoring the Bible. Quakers rejected biblical AUTHORITY and infallibility. I guess rejected is not fair. They accepted the Bible as advice only. They rejected it as the infallible FINAL SAY, or as literal, or inerrancy or sola scriptura. They felt that the divine light is in everyone, equally, man and woman. The womens movement is permeated with Quaker names, as was abolitionism, the peace movement, and by and large, most of the social activism and social justice movements in this country (England as well). Other Quaker scientists include such Britishers as Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington. John Dalton, and (more recently) Jocelyn Bell Burnell. In America, the science guy -- Bill Nye, while not a Quaker, he had some Quaker education.
