Marie Curie is often lauded as the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, but did you know she was also the only woman to win it in two fields, and the only person to win in multiple sciences? Her list of achievements goes on: first woman to become a professor at the Sorbonne, first woman to be interred for her own merit in Paris’ Panthéon, discovered polonium and isolated radium. Sadly, her incredible work led to her death; at the time, the dangers of radiation were not known. Curie would carry bottles of radioactive substances in her coat pocket, and store them in a desk drawer. Even her cookbook was so irradiated that today visitors who wish to look at her belongings must sign a waiver and don a protective suit before looking inside the lead-lined containers!
