About the role As a Marine Conservation Officer, you’ll play a big part in the administration and quality assurance of IFCA byelaws – crucial legislation that governs the way the seas around Britain are used. You’ll help us provide a quality assurance service to the IFCAs, working in partnership to ensure effective and appropriate byelaws are in place. It’s a chance to work closely with the ten IFCAs in England as well as Defra, Government departments, statutory advisers, devolved administrations and a wide range of stakeholders. You’ll be giving advice, dealing with queries and deputising for the Marine Environment Manager in meetings. You’ll also be involved in the issuing of marine wildlife licences; another task that involves extensive engagement with a wide network of contacts, in order to ensure that important marine species are suitably protected. About the individual Organised and collaborative, you combine strong analytical skills with a gift for communication. That means you can apply legislation and interpret data, but also influence and advise a variety of people, within and outside the MMO. With these talents, you’ll deal with academic, industrial, professional and scientific contacts and make the most of their knowledge. At the same time, you’ll manage a busy workload in the office, drawing on your ability to deliver a high quality service that meets deadlines. A degree (or equivalent experience) in a Science, Biology or Marine-related subject would be an advantage, as would knowledge of fishing practices. About the MMO The Marine Management Organisation license, regulate and plan marine activities in the seas around England and Wales so that theyre carried out in a sustainable way.
