In order to keep themselves warm in cooler waters, dolphins have a thick layer of blubber in the hypodermal layer of their skin. Blubber is highly vascularized fat that covers dolphins’ entire bodies, excluding their appendages, and its primary function is to keep the dolphin warm, similar to the function of fur in other mammals.
