Mario M. Cuomo, the three-term governor of New York from 1983 through 1994, died at the age of 82 on Thursday (Jan 1 ,2015) at his home in Manhattan. Mario Matthew Cuomo was born in the Briarwood section of Queens on June 15, 1932, the fourth child of Andrea and Immaculata (née Giordano) Cuomo. His parents, penniless and unable to speak English, had come to the United States from the province of Salerno. The family owned a store in South Jamaica, Queens. Cuomo attended New York City P.S. 50 and then St. Johns Preparatory School. Cuomo earned a bachelors degree in 1953 from St. Johns University. Deciding on a legal career, Cuomo attended St. Johns University School of Law, from which he graduated tied for first in his class in 1956. Mr. Cuomo, a man of large intellect and often unrestrained personality, celebrated it, with an expansive and affirmative view of government and a message of compassion, tinged by the Roman Catholicism that was central to his identity from which he never wavered. After winning his first gubernatorial race, with his mother seated onstage with him, Mr. Cuomo finished his inaugural speech by urging his audience to “pray that we all see New York for the family that it is.”
