Marion I.S.D. Years in Review 1980-81 Superintendent of schools was Winfred Farquhar and high school principal was Richard Brown. Graduation was held on May 27, 1981. Valedictorian was Todd Staats and Salutatorian was Rhonda Cabe. Pat Cyr and David Alcorn gave the commencement addresses. Sharon Goerke gave the invocation at graduation, and Jerry Coleman gave the benediction. There were 45 students in the 1981 graduating class. The 1981 yearbook was dedicated to Sue Karrer, who at that time had taught school for 21 years. Mrs. Betty Jean Schlichting was the school secretary and Victoria Lambdin was the school counselor. Kay Specht was the school nurse and she was officed at the high school campus. An Honors English class was added and was taught by Kathy Waller. The junior class was one of the biggest classes in the history of Marion. They sold turkeys for the holidays, and hard candy in glass dishes to raise money for the prom. The sophomores sold magazines as a fundraiser. The Homecoming Queen was Sharon Goerke, escorted by John Baker. The yearbook included grades K-12 and was dedicated to Frank Gonzales and Carol Grimsley, who were killed in 2 separate automobile accidents. The varsity cheerleaders were Sharon Dacy, Rosalind Sheppard, Linda Duncan, Donna Haese, Rebe Posey (Penshorn), Kathy Kilgore, and Debbie Russell (mascot). The Intermediate school had cheerleaders and a pep squad. Their sponsors were Mary Nell Matthis and Trudy Debose. The girl’s basketball team won district and lost in Regionals. Making All District in basketball were Allyson Maurer (Laws), Reba Posey (Penshorn), and Jerry Coleman. Allyson Maurer (Laws) went to the State Track Meet in high jump and 100-meter hurdles. For the 2nd year, Choir was offered at MHS and was sponsored by Kathy Waller. They sang at the Halloween Carnival, the Marion Lion’s Club Christmas party, and sang Christmas carols through the halls of the high school. The Student Council was in charge of putting up and taking down the flags each day, and also the announcements and Pledge of Allegiance. The school newspaper was called the “Bulldog’s Bark”.The band won the Sweepstakes award and was invited for the first time to the State Marching contest. The drum major was Sharon Goerke and the band director was Pat Norton. The dance team was called the Bulldog Boogie Babes. Class colors were burgundy and ivory and the class flower was the rose. The senior class song was “We’ve Only Just Begun”. The class motto was “You can never discover new oceans until you have courage to lose sight of the shore”. The senior class officers were Jerry Coleman (president), Sharon Goerke (vice president), Jane Baker (secretary) and Carey Cannon (treasurer). The senior class sponsors were Carolyn Huebinger, Jim Missildine, JoAnn Lange, and Doug Patton. School board members were Ed Kirkham, Leroy Boenig, Vernon Schwab, Melvin Vader, Tom Brooks, Richard Henke, and Marilyn Kilgore. Graduates of the class of 1981 were Gregory Dean Albrecht, David Jordan Alcorn, Kirsten Lea Anderson, David W.
