Maritime Academy of Toledo Cadets to Train on U.S. Brig Niagara This Week (Toledo, OH) --- Tom Shafer, Superintendent, The Maritime Academy of Toledo, announced today that, for the first time, ten Maritime Academy cadets will work and train on U.S. Brig Niagara for seven days Sept. 16 – 22 as part of training program offered by the reconstructed relief flagship of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. The ten cadets are part of The Maritime Academy of Toledo’s Career Tech Education (CTE) Program which is an exclusive three-year education-to-work or maritime college program that trains cadets to enter the maritime industry or to further their education after high school graduation. According to Rick Brown, Director of the CTE Program, 93 cadets are part of the program for the 2014 – 2015 school year. The Maritime Academy cadets will depart on Tuesday, Sept 16 at 8 a.m. for Erie, PA where they will join the crew of U.S. Brig Niagara. They will go through ship familiarity training, emergency drills, and stay aboard overnight. On Wednesday, Sept. 17, the cadets will sail with U.S. Brig Niagara from Erie, PA to Buffalo, NY. They arrive in Buffalo on Thursday Sept. 18 where the U.S. Brig Niagara will take part in the Second Annual Buffalo Maritime Festival from Sept. 19 – 21. On Monday, Sept. 22 the cadets will have a day sail near Buffalo. The cadets are scheduled to return home on Tuesday, Sept. 22. While aboard ship, the cadets will participate in underway activities, watch standing, in-port watch, small boat operations, cleaning, and other vessel activities. “This is an incredible opportunity for our cadets,” said Mr. Brown. “U.S. Brig Niagara has a classroom component aboard ship that will allow our cadets to have hands-on training and become an active part of the crew. They will learn skills of traditional square-rig seamanship, terminology, physical skills, familiarity with the vessel, and the social structure of shipboard life through this experience. They will eat, sleep, work, and live with the crew on-board the ship.” The cost for the training is approximately $500 per student for the week’s experience and was paid for through corporate donations. Officials with the Maritime Academy hope to raise enough money to allow cadets to experience three weeks worth of training next summer. That expanded program cost $1,500 per cadet.
