Marius the giraffe killed at Copenhagen zoo despite worldwide protests Yesterday a healthy young giraffe considered useless for breeding because his genes were too common, was put down in a zoo in Copenhagen, skinned and fed to lions in front of members of the public, including young children. The giraffe was killed as the zoo is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, which has strict rules on interbreeding. Bengt Holst, the zoos scientific director, said he had never considered cancelling the killing, despite the protests. It is no secret that animals are killed when there is no longer space, or if the animals don’t have genes that are interesting enough. This serves as a reminder that zoos aren’t the ethical institution that they want to portray themselves as being. Animals are treated in many cases as a waste product – that being the young giraffe Marius. The only way to stop this is to not visit zoos. A petition has been launched, which has already gathered over 10,000 signatures demanding the closure of Copenhagen zoo for the needless slaughter of Marius.
