Mark Averys epetition to ban driven grouse shooting has reached 16000 signatures. Mark, a colleague on Hen Harrier Day of course, has written many times on why he feels that a ban on driven (as opposed to walked-up) grouse shooting is the only answer to raptor persecution, large-scale predator removal, repeated heather burning, and groundwater issues (see eg markavery.info/2014/06/15/banning-driven-grouse-shooting-bit-summary-issues/) We have said since we launched (in April this year - it seems far longer!) that we are focussed entirely on wildlife crime, and not with debating the merits or otherwise of shooting per se: but the wildlife crimes that seem to go hand in hand with driven grouse shooting make us (and clearly many others) question whether this particular sport can exist without wildlife crime taking place. As weve (also) said repeatedly, its about time the shooting industry convinced all of us that driven grouse shooting can survive alongside Hen Harriers and other protected birds of prey rather than spend all its efforts on looking to move those same birds out of the way instead.
