One of the aims of learning is to create challenges but to arrange conditions so that the success rate at any activity is around the 80% mark so leading to improved motivation, enthusiasm and confidence. 100% success in any activity may lead to boredom as the activity is too easy. A success rate of less than 80% will lead to frustration as the activity is too challenging, so all activities need to be organised so that you have around an 80% success rate. Socratic method Socrates the philosopher encouraged his students to learn by answering their questions with a series of questions of his own. He directed his questions in such a way that his students would discover the answers for themselves and through this develop their own critical and independent thinking. He felt that by discovering the answers themselves they would learn how to think more logically and improve their knowledge and understanding. He also felt that in improving their ability to think, their confidence and ability to understand would also improve. In using this Socratic method you work out the answers through your own thinking, you fully learn and understand the facts as you have thought them out yourself, and you develop your own strategies for thinking and problem solving. Best of all, you realise your own ability to think. Using the method Ask questions that will lead the individual to the correct answer. Your questions need to be logical and follow a sequence. The individual needs to give you the answers rather than you answering the questions for them. The individual will remember the answers more readily as they have come from their own thinking. You are also teaching them a sequential method of thinking and developing their thinking and problem solving skills. At the same time they are becoming more independent and will need less help in completing tasks in future. #VisionTherapy
