Mark Zuckerberg gave a wonderful talk at the Internet.org Summit in India, explaining why access to information (through the Internet) should be viewed as human right. Connecting all of humanity is an important technical and economic challenge for the coming decades. My prior exposure to the challenges of connecting remote areas came through my my friend and NYU colleague Lakshmi Subramanian, who has been a pioneer in devising and deploying technologies that enable access to information in the developing world. He has developed technologies for long-range Wifi, technologies for email and delayed web access in remote villages through relays carried around by public buses that communicate with other relays in bus stops, through smart predictive caching to reduce bandwidth. A number of his project on rural connectivity are described here: cs.nyu.edu/~lakshmi/Lakshmi/Project%20Websites/GreenLinks/Home.html Lakshmi also co-directs the NYU Center for Technology and Economic Develpment based at the NYU Abu Dhabi campus nyucted.org/
