Mark it on your calendars!!! Today is the day that Heavy Glow quoted Taylor Swift!!! This is an interesting interview and I agree with her views on Spotify 100%. Nothing more to add to it really. If I had streamed the new album, its impossible to try to speculate what would have happened. But all I can say is that music is changing so quickly, and the landscape of the music industry itself is changing so quickly, that everything new, like Spotify, all feels to me a bit like a grand experiment. And Im not wiling to contribute my lifes work to an experiment that I dont feel fairly compensates the writers, producers, artists, and creators of this music. And I just dont agree with perpetuating the perception that music has no value and should be free. I wrote an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal this summer that basically portrayed my views on this. I try to stay really open-minded about things, because I do think its important to be a part of progress. But I think its really still up for debate whether this is actual progress, or whether this is taking the word music out of the music industry. Also, a lot of people were suggesting to me that I try putting new music on Spotify with Shake It Off, and so I was open-minded about it. I thought, I will try this; Ill see how it feels. It didnt feel right to me. I felt like I was saying to my fans, If you create music someday, if you create a painting someday, someone can just walk into a museum, take it off the wall, rip off a corner off it, and its theirs now and they dont have to pay for it. I didnt like the perception that it was putting forth.
