Mark, my son and I went to Carrol county Sunday to put the finishing touches on a set of kitchen cabinets. First tho, we attended the last day of New Shiloh Churchs revival which is located in the Gravel hill community. The Preacher, Carry Tannin, warned us that he might do some , uh, crazy stuff. He did. but in such a way as to hold my attention-- he surely did not lull me to sleep, and I had no impure thoughts , for he was stomping down the aisle so often and kicking the devil around so much, I thought maybe he would grab me as an example--glad he didnt--as I didnt feel like owning up to so many wrong doings.--We had a great old fashion dinner on the grounds, outside. Some charming old lady ask if I knew how the Carrol county blues started--no, said I--she told me that in 1924, Sid Carter, a somewhat local famous fiddler, drove his mules to the gin with a wagon load of cotton. while waiting to get it gin he listen to a little black boy doing a bad , but catchy tune in trying to imitate a steam choo-choo train. The tune stayed in Sids head and over the net few days he evolved it out with his fiddler and played at a barn dance, calling it the Carrol county blues--those Carrol county folks went wild!---Kicking up their heels all night, and then dancing a little longer.--Never heard it? hit it on utube!
