Talk Story with Filipino Community Leaders Dr. Romeo Quijano and Gilbert Sape: Health, Community, and Food Sovereignty: Lessons from the front lines Filipino leaders Dr. Romeo Quijano, MD and Gilbert Sape are coming to Hawaii to share their experiences organizing in the Philippines and empower communities with resources to take control of their health, workplace, and food systems. They will share their international experience and expertise in toxicology, pharmacology, toxic chemicals, and how the precautionary principle applies to agricultural practices and community wellness. Both will highlight the important role Filipino history and cultural values can play in empowering communities who are demanding corporate responsibility, accountability, and fair, safe working and living environments. About the Speakers: Dr. Romeo Quijano is a medical doctor and professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of the Philippines, Manila; his is president of Pesticide Action Network Philippines and former co-chairman of the International POPs Elimination Network. Gilbert Sape is an organizer and international campaigner, and formerly Coordinator of the Food Sovereignty and Ecological Agriculture Programs at Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Asia and the Pacific. Sape has devoted his life to working on issues including food sovereignty, pesticides, access to land, food, and productive resources, and climate change. Their island visit is coordinated in collaboration with Pesticide Action Network, the Hawaii Center for Food Safety, and Hawaii SEED, with support from CERES Trust.
