Markeeta invited to Sri Lanka Congratulations to Markeeta Douglas the 2013 NSW and Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the YearMarkeeta Douglas has been invited to the International Conference on TVET – 2014 in Sri Lanka “During my NSW and Australian Training Awards journey I was hearing stories from previous winners and their life after taking out their tittles. I heard phrases like “this will change your life” “it has taken me around the world” “the opportunities are endless”. I guess hearing this you never actually imagine that it would really happen, I’m just a young Aboriginal woman from a little mission in Kempsey NSW. I have had the opportunity to speak and share my story at a few local events since winning so when I received the phone call from the Australian Training Awards I assumed it would be something similar. I was asked if I was interested in speaking at a conference in July, I responded with a big yes and then I was informed that it was in Sri Lanka, WOW!! My first thoughts consisted of, I have never ever been overseas, I don’t have a passport and I’ll be in a completely different country to my children. On a serious note, to be asked to represent Australia, the VET system, the Australian Training Awards, my industry, my community, my family and my culture is really amazing. I have been asked to go to a completely different country and simply tell my story, I am not sure that it is worthy of such an opportunity but I am so very grateful for being nominated. I hope I do everyone proud and I promise to do my very best.” Markeeta Douglas
