Markets display both the virtues and vices of a people. It is important to avoid the temptation to either idolize the market or to suppose that virtue is something that can be politically implemented by bureaucrats. Strengthening the moral content of a people through civil society is the best response to vice, rather than burdensome regulation that inhibits human freedom and stifles innovation and creativity. ~ The Acton Institute The proper functioning of free markets requires the rule of law and virtue, which provide structure and meet the common good respectively. No one who understands human nature would advocate an unrestrained marketplace, nor would they presume that laws alone are enough to ensure the integrity and social responsibility of a profit-making enterprise. Just as a virtuous people make a virtuous government, so do they make a virtuous marketplace.
