Marloth Missive If you drive from Gauteng to Marloth Park, the destruction of the environment by mining is painfully visible in many places. As if that assault on the senses isnt enough, youre forced to sit behind slow-moving, heavily-loaded trucks moving the result of these mining activities to the port at Maputo. Ironically, for most of its route, the N4 highway runs alongside the railway line, which belongs to Transnet, which used to be one of the biggest employers in Africa. Instead of providing the jobs that are so sorely needed in our country, mining has been stripping jobs out of our economy for a long time now. Its easy to understand why. Politically-connected individuals own the mines, and we all know how much our politicians and their buddies care about the rest of the population. The Kruger National Park is the jewel in South Africas tourism crown. The best-known game reserve in the world is also the biggest provider of jobs in our area, not only in the Park itself, but in the hundreds of lodges and guest houses on the South bank of the Crocodile River, including our beloved Marloth Park. This is all set to change soon. Prospecting permits, allowing mining companies to prospect for iron ore on the Southern bank of the Crocodile, have already been issued. As usual, none of the legal imperatives have been followed by the unaccountable elite of our country. Unless some eagle-eyed concerned residents hadnt spotted what was happening, the first we in MP would have known about this, would have been the dead hippos, crocs and fish floating in the river which would have turned an ugly brown colour, polluted beyond rehabilitation. Mining companies will protest, hand over heart, that they are responsible citizens, but unfortunately their deeds prove they are worse liars than our politicians. The bottom line is that South Africa is again being colonised, this time by the Chinese. We are set to be exploited by a vast economy desperate for raw materials to feed their giant factories. We (MP) are unimportant collateral damage in this quest. Forget about protection by our elected government, for they have proved that they serve no-one but themselves. In the fight to save Marloth Park, we are alone. The only way we can save our little piece of paradise, is to stand together. Strengthen the hand of MPPOA by joining NOW!
