Married couples should be incentivised to stay together? AGREE!? A former high court judge has said married couples should receive tax breaks of increasing value when they reach their fifth, tenth and twentieth wedding anniversaries, as a reward for staying together. Sir Paul Coleridge said such a system would acknowledge that families who stay together save the taxpayer money. He described the small-scale tax break that David Cameron will give to some married couples this spring as ridiculous, stating: “Where is the incentive for people to stay together?” Meanwhile, accountant BDO has predicted that a recovering Scottish economy could lead to a higher divorce rate in the country. The firm said the number of couples breaking up is likely to increase if people feel more financially able to separate due to a more stable economic climate.
