Mars One insists the technology exists to take colonists to the Red Planet and establish a settlement with existing technologies. The mission plan dovetails well with tested components that are readily available from industry leaders worldwide. Getting people up to speed is another matter. Those chosen for the trip will undergo a full time, extensive eight-year training program. They’ll be isolated from the world for a few months every two years to see how they respond to living in close quarters. They’ll also need training in physical and electrical repairs to the settlement structures, cultivating crops in confined spaces, and addressing both routine and serious medical issues. The flight to Mars could take up to eight months. The quarters will be cramped. No showers, just wet towelettes, freeze dried meals, constant noise from ventilators and life support systems, and three-hours of daily exercise to maintain muscle mass. Once they arrive on Mars, the astronauts will have 50 square meters of living space (about 21 feet x 21 feet) per person. The settlement will consist of inflatable bedrooms, working areas, a living room and a ‘plant production unit where they’ll grow food and greenery.
