Tickets: artscenterlive.org/events/martha-redbone-roots-project/ Raised in both the borough of Brooklyn and the Bluegrass State of Kentucky, Martha Redbone calls herself a “Hoodalachia Country Mama.” She’s also one of the leading contemporary voices in Native American music—fusing her Cherokee and Choctaw heritage to her African-American legacy in vibrant funk and R&B. On her latest, The Garden of Love: Songs of William Blake, Redbone plunges her hands deep into both the fertile soil of American roots music and the late- 18th century mystical and romantic realm of the British bard’s poetry. Although separated by centuries and cultures, Redbone and Blake are a remarkable match. Redbone vocally communes with Blake’s evocative words, setting them to the soundtrack of Appalachia: driving bluegrass, Piedmont blues, plaintive field hollers, Seminole chants, and spirited gospel rave-ups. Gathering critical attention and accolades throughout the Americana/roots and Native American communities, The Garden of Love was guided in production by John McEuen (of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band fame) with a stellar cast of Nashville’s top session artists. Throughout, Redbone infuses Blake’s iconic poetry with both a reverence for old-time music and a modern-day edge. These are tales of youthful promise, lost innocence, wondrous beauty, deep sorrow, nurtured jealousy, and regained hope. And in the context of Redbone’s own distinct ancestry, her music is filled with spellbinding stories of America’s past and promise.
