Martha Reeves and the Vandellas - Dancing in the Street Written by Marvin Gaye, William Mickey Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter Peaked at number 28 The idea for the song came when producer and songwriter Stevenson watched people on the streets of Detroit cool off in water from opened fire hydrants, during a hot summer day. Initially an innocent dance song, it took on a different meaning when young black demonstrators were citing the song as a civil rights anthem. Now the song is remembered as one of Motowns signature songs, and it is probably the best known song from Martha & The Vandellas.
