Martin Luther King Jr. talking to Harry Belafonte: “I said, ‘What’s the matter, Martin? You seem very agitated.’ He said, ‘Well, I am, because I’ve come upon a thought that I don’t know how to deal with at this moment.’ I said, ‘Well, what is it?’ He said, ‘We’ve fought long for integration. It looks like we’re gonna get it. I think we’ll get the laws,” he says. “But I’m afraid that I’ve come upon something that I don’t know quite what to do with. I’m afraid that we’re integrating into a burning house.’” Every time I read this passage or I come across a video of Martin actually saying it, I get goose bumps from the prophetic power behind those statements. I dont mean prophetic in that weak, religious type of way. I mean that his spirit was vexed by a truth that had not yet manifested itself. What Martin was struggling with was that all of that fighting for integration had been wasted on the illusion of elevation and power. He had come to the perspicacity that true black power was in group economics and ownership --- something we already had. Later, I will be presenting to you The Burning Building, a fresh look inside what Dr. King Really meant about integrating into a burning building!
