Marvin Gayes last single for Motown Records, Got To Give It Up - TopicsExpress

Marvin Gayes last single for Motown Records, Got To Give It Up (Part 1) was #1 on Billboard Magazines Pop chart on this day in 1977. Marvin would later sign with Columbia and enjoy another string of hits. The first recording session for the song, originally titled Dancing Lady, was on December 13, 1976. Influenced by the Johnnie Taylor hit, Disco Lady, Gaye was inspired to create his answer song to Taylors hit. To help set up a disco atmosphere, Gaye hired Motown producer and engineer Art Stewart to oversee the songs production. Then, Gaye and Stewart brought in several musicians and Gayes friends and family (mainly his brother Frankie, sister Zeola and girlfriend Janis Hunter) to the recording studio to give it a live sound. The songs story line focuses on a man who is a wallflower when he comes into a nightclub nervous to perform on the dance floor. But after a minute of this, the music takes over and his body starts to lose any inhibitions. None of that edited AM stuff here...lets dance to the full 12 minute version!
