“Mary Kom” – The personality definitely raises a notch above the movie!!! I am spellbound...am absolutely short of words! Any aim in life takes guts to achieve and this iron lady certainly had, if I may dare, some balls to be out there in the chauvinist male society and shine to glory. Such movies need to be made, otherwise would we have ever cared to know who a Mary Kom is...so what if she is a five time record holder in boxing; so what if she is a Padma Bhushan awardee; so what if she came from a humble state of Manipur and conquered the sky; so what if she has her eyes set on Rio Olympics Gold...Omung Kumar has brought the victory on celluloid and quite an execution I have to say...salute! And here, how can I not talk about the lady, the “Priyanka Chopra” who brings Mary Kom alive on screen, all dazzling and a spitfire! She has given herself to the role and it shows; it connects with us, a little laboured effort and the “diva” aura still intact, but she fairly manages to be relatable as the sport star. I wonder if any other actress would have brought more spunk and a few names immediately come to my mind but then I hold myself..e on, Priyanka, hats off to assertively take up the role, believe in it and deliver a spark! The pillar of support, the loving and patient husband “Onlur” played by Darshan Kumar, definitely deserves a pat on the back for being able to stand out of an underplayed and overshadowed role. Same goes for the renowned actor Sunil Thapa as “Coach Sir”; his eyes speak determinedly and reflect emotions of passion and hunger for winning, even better than Priyanka at times. All others lending a hand as support are apt and sufficient, I would say. Coming back to the highs of the movie, the protagonist is fantastic in moments like when training strenuously in beautiful Manali or scathing with a dialogue “Kisi ko itna bhi mat darao ki dar hi khatm ho jaaye”; she is at her lilting best with her rejoiced expressions whenever she wins a match...her eyes sparkle and help us feel as this would be how Mary would have felt in jubilation. The understated humour is at its best when Mary Kom teases her husband about the water being too cold or calling herself as close to a cow...so well played and manages to bring a slow lasting smile. I also could feel a numbness and a tug at heart when the kid’s heartbeat rises again; I did get misty eyed when Mary wins her final match against all odds...the cheering created a thump and could see many in the theatre giving a standing ovation much before we all actually rose for the national anthem for the final applause. Priyanka certainly reached out to us through so affable a bonding with her twins and her heartfelt turmoil. Yes, Omung has managed to get our accolades for building a crisp, taut and no-nonsense engagement through able direction and script, but little alter-image here; certainly the conventionality of certain scenes could have been avoided like the Eastern UP flavour of the federation...the voice against bias and the mockery of an apology could have been more hard-hitting. Same goes for Priyanka’s demeanour while playing the rustic Manipuri or her accent; it could have been less stylised and earthier. Priyanka, you needed to let yourself loose of your fashionista avatar and get into the hard, struggling core of the diva which is Mary Kom. And, I have to mention, the soul-stirring music is the hero of the movie...the movie falls a little short of brilliance but the music surpasses that. “Adhure”, “Dil Yeh Ziddi Hai” and “Teri Baari” are stupendous; I sincerely urge all to please stand still and do let the end credits roll while the track “Teri Baari” plays; this song is certainly an anthem for anyone who is out there to live ones’ dreams. The song inspires and shakes you up. Go for it! And I cannot conclude this without a heart-felt cheer for the champion: Mary Kom. I so much wish to go out there and shake hands with her, just to believe in the fact that, “Yes, I can and I will, just like Mary Kom”. I feel the movie has done its bit to talk about the woman who has given us one more reason to get our heads high in this world. A movie...captivating certainly, but a little short of what’s “PERFECTION”!
