Mary Mellor brings economics down to earth in this lecture she gave at the Schumacher College. We have been hoodwinked into believing that our economy is like a household. It is not. We have been persuaded that it is necessary to continue with austerity and balance the books. It is not. Ha Joon Chang, the real economist says that economics is common sense and therefore within the grasp of understanding of most of us. Instead politicians of all colours like to claim that they know better than us mere mortals. They dont. Its only a short step away to learning why emphasis on the deficit, austerity and balancing the books is a neoliberal con and how money could be used to create an economy that meets our needs instead of the needs of rich corporations and individuals.
