Mary Nohl spent her rollicking childhood years in a comfortable - TopicsExpress

Mary Nohl spent her rollicking childhood years in a comfortable Queen Anne house at 3017 N. Stowell Avenue. During these years, she had many adventures in habitat construction, including a “best beloved home” from a piano box and a secret meeting place under the front porch of the big house which she and her friends decorated with crayon drawings. After looking at the picture on page 17 of Barbara Manger’s and Janine Smith’s definitive book, Mary Nohl, Inside and Outside, I decided to visit the house. This block of North Stowell still retains an overall veneer of classic East Side stateliness, although UWM rental incursions have taken their toll, upon closer examination. Here is the house as it looks today (picture 1). Here is the porch which once concealed Marys secret clubhouse. Is it possible that some of the messages sealed in bottles might still be underneath (picture 2)? (DEAR RUTH KOHLER AND COMPANY: Mary Nohl’s roots are here with us, not in Sheboygan. Please do everything in your power to respect her final wishes. DEAR FOX POINT RESIDENTS: Please step up and work with the Kohler folks to preserve the treasure of Mary’s sculpture garden that has been placed in your midst.) Posted by DWRz
