Maryam Lahuti Kamali: Faranak joon, This was at the National Animal Rights Day in San Francisco on May 31st. This is an annual event which will take place in different cities in the US and around the world. This is to remember the lives of billions of animals (our fellow Earthlings) who violently get killed each year as the result of todays human lifestyle and diet. I was holding Scarlet, a sweet calf who died before she was born... They slaughtered her mother while she was pregnant with Scarlet. Like billions of baby cows, Scarlett’s poor mother was likely a victim of the dairy industry for years until she was killed because her milk production no longer was profitable. Again and again, she would have been forcefully artificially inseminated to become pregnant in order to produce milk, her calves taken away shortly after birth so humans can steal the milk meant for her babies. Scarlett would have met the same fate. When I was holding her, I could see her beautiful long eyelashes, nose, face, cute ears, and she looked so much like a puppy. The pain I was feeling was immense, but it was absolutely nothing compared to how other animals; we so ignorantly call food, feel every second of their lives on this planet. I looked around and I could see so much sadness on the faces of everyone who was at the ceremony. My wish is for all humans to realize that all animals are just like us. There is no humane slaughter, and every animal product means torture, violence, pain and suffering. We can stop this by stop buying what multi-million dollar companies have so cleverly brainwashed us to call food, shoes, clothes for many years... as if meat is a just a thing, as if no body was killed against their will, as if their lives are less important than ours, and as if their pain is not the same as ours. All animals are someones, not somethings. Philip Wollen says it so eloquently I discovered when we suffer, we suffer as equals. And in their capacity to suffer, a dog is a pig is a bear. . . . . . is a boy. - See more at: freefromharm.org/videos/educational-inspiring-talks/philip-wollen-australian-philanthropist-former-vp-of-citibank-makes-blazing-animal-rights-speech/
