Maryland County Pleebo-Sodoken district # 2 Representative Dr. Bhofal Chambers has called on the Unity Party (UP) led-government of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf to make some readjustments and cater to the needs of the Liberian people. According to him, the “carelessness” of the UP led regime has made Liberians vulnerable in their own country. He said some citizens are being viewed as “slaves” due to the current hardship in Liberia. Rep. Chambers was speaking recently in an interview with legislative reporters at the Capitol Building in Monrovia. The Capitol Building is the official seat of the Liberian Legislature. He said the interest of the Liberian people must be considered by the President in the discharge of her constitutional mandate. He stated that many Liberians lack access to safe drinking and housing facilities and therefore, government must ensure that the warfare of its citizens is prioritized. Rep. Chambers added that concession companies operating in the country are constantly dislodging Liberians noting that, “the lands of our people are going.” “The carelessness of this regime act of carelessness has rendered our people vulnerable to the extent that where they are now being viewed less than slaves. This regime needs to readjust itself because we cannot live in an era that would be worse than the apartheid regime. Our people are being constantly dislodged especially in Pleebo-Sodoken district. It seems to us that the plants at the plantation in Maryland County are more important than our towns and villages. For me, it’s shocking. What even Presidents Doe and Taylor didn’t do to the Liberian people. That is what President Sirleaf is doing. You cannot have a country by law being called a country without land miles. The lands of our people are going. What is the warfare of our people you see around here? You find around here people are being dislodged on a regular basis; there is no drinking water for our people which is one of those rights of our people. Housing does not exist,” he stated. The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) lawmaker pointed out that the essence of government is to make its people happy and therefore, citizens must benefit from investments that are currently in the country. He said the Liberian people should no longer be mortgaged noting that, the President must do the “right thing.” He stated that systems and procedures that would better the living conditions of Liberians are currently lacking in government. “President Sirleaf needs to immediately rethink and do the right thing. With all of these gaps and weaknesses that we are seeing in Liberia, I think it is about time that the President be more of a leader and gracefully take the moral hard ground. This country deserves something better. What we have seen under the watchful eyes of President Sirleaf, things are not acting base on systems and procedures. Liberia can no longer be mortgaged. The President needs to consider the interest of our people. Government comes into existence for a singular purpose. And that is to bring happiness to our people. The president seems to be a spectator to the harm against our people in this country. If you go to concessions in this country; concessions now take their assets or properties to be more important than our people. Why should people be in their towns and they cannot benefit from the investments that are there. I believe that there is a need for co-prosperity. As the company benefits, the people themselves must benefit,” he amongst other things stated.
